Vanderbilt Fills Final Coaching Vacancy with Hire of James Madison’s Mark Byington

Vanderbilt Welcomes Mark Byington as Head Coach: Former James Madison Coach Guides Dukes to Impressive 32-4 Season in 2023-24

On Monday, the world of college basketball experienced a flurry of coaching changes. First, Kyle Smith left his position at Stanford to join Washington. Then, James Madison coach Mark Byington was hired by Vanderbilt, just less than 18 hours after his team was defeated by Duke in the NCAA Tournament. Despite their loss, Duke had an impressive season, finishing with a 32-4 record and being ranked 62nd at KenPom.com.

Byington played a significant role in turning JMU into a strong mid-major program over the past four years. He led them through a conference transition and posted an impressive record of 82-36. With this hire, Vanderbilt has filled its final vacancy for high-major programs, leaving only Louisville, Oklahoma State, and SMU with open positions on their coaching staffs.
