Protesters Call Out Science Museum’s Oil and Gas Sponsorship, But Director Stands Firm on Importance of Addressing Climate Change

Science Museum sponsor urges ‘armchair activists’ to step back

A group of protesters led by Greta Thunberg recently took to the streets in front of the Science Museum. The group held up a banner with a message that read: “2024, more droughts and floods – fuelled by Science Museum oil and gas sponsors”. The Fossil Free Science Museum coalition, made up of Extinction Rebellion and Scientists for Extinction Rebellion, raised concerns about the museum’s reputation being tarnished by its oil and gas sponsors.

Despite the controversy surrounding the museum’s oil and gas sponsorship, Sir Ian Blatchford, director and CEO of the Science Museum Group, emphasized the importance of engaging audiences with the science of climate change. Blatchford described climate change as “the defining challenge of our time” and stated that the museum is committed to addressing this critical issue.

The museum’s new gallery was made possible through a partnership with Adani Green Energy. While some activists have criticized this decision, Blatchford defended it, stating that he believes it is important for companies like Adani Green Energy to be involved in efforts to make the global economy less carbon intensive.

Overall, while there may be controversy surrounding certain aspects of its operations, the Science Museum remains committed to educating the public on climate change and promoting sustainable practices.
