From Personalized Learning to Ethical Considerations: Unlocking the Potential of AI in Peru’s Education System

A Student’s Guide to Using Artificial Intelligence Responsibly and Effectively

In the 2024 school year, over 6 million students in Peru returned to classrooms to begin their academic activities. With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), some students are turning to technology to complete their tasks. However, it is important for students to understand the correct use of AI tools.

To create a guide on the appropriate use of AI tools for students, we interviewed Liliana Muñoz Guevara, director of the Comprehensive Basic Training Unit at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, and Omar Florez, an AI scientist. Muñoz advises students not to be afraid to use new tools and to use them wisely, as AI can facilitate personalized learning and deeper exploration of complex topics.

There are various AI tools available to students that can aid in academic tasks. ChatGPT is an AI chatbot that can provide answers to general knowledge questions, while Perplexity is connected to the internet and provides accurate and up-to-date information. Wolfram Alpha is an online tool for solving mathematical queries. It is important for students to verify the original source of data when using AI chatbots to ensure the accuracy of information.

AI can enhance academic performance in various areas such as language learning and science projects but may be limited in disciplines requiring practical skills like engineering or medicine. However, in areas like music and dance, AI can contribute to creative processes through generative AI tools. It is crucial for students to consider ethical aspects when using AI in education and not lose sight of the human aspect of learning like peer interaction and teacher guidance.

In conclusion, with proper guidance and ethical considerations, AI can be a valuable tool for enhancing student’s academic performance while also providing personalized learning experiences that deepen understanding of complex topics.
