Against the Odds: Uni Group’s Triumph Despite Closures and Franchise Conversions

Unimarkt branches transitioning into franchises

The UNI Group, consisting of Unimarkt Handelsgesellschaft, UNIWholesale, and UNILogistik, faced challenges this year. Despite the closure of unprofitable online shops and changes in operating hours at the 17 locations in UNIBox due to a ruling by the Constitutional Court, the group achieved total sales of around 474 million euros.

Unimarkt is currently converting all its branches into franchises by 2024/25. Out of the 124 branches, 65 are already being managed by franchise partners. Although there were challenges during the financial year 2023/24, the group remained profitable with sales growth from the previous year.

The concept of autonomous UNIBoxes was not successful and resulted in their closure due to lack of profitability. However, the knowledge gained from this venture will be utilized in Nah&Frisch hybrid markets within the group. With a total of 23 hybrid locations at the end of the financial year and an expansion plan for 16 more locations planned for next year, Nah&Frisch sees continued growth potential.

In addition to its other operations, Unimarkt now operates two hybrid locations and sees this concept as a viable future for its business amidst challenges in finding employees. The group consists of UNIWholesale, UNILogistik, Unimarkt Handels GmbH, and 50% ownership of convenience supplier unik which achieved sales of 87 million euros in the previous financial year. With around 3,100 employees focused on sustainable growth and strategic expansion, Uni Group remains committed to long-term success.
